Dixie Melody Boys concert slated

PRINCETON — The Praise Sanctuary, 305 Barden St., will host the Dixie Melody Boys in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. Admission is free and a love offering will be taken.

Johnston DSS to host blood drive

SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Department of Social Services will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 1:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 in Building 3, 806 North St.

The Red Cross is seeking donors of all blood types, especially platelet donors and those with type O blood. Participants can make appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross blood donor app, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Church offers free sweet potatoes

MIDDLESEX — Samaria Baptist Church, 3752 Samaria Church Lane at the intersection of N.C. 97 and N.C. 231, is offering free sweet potatoes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. Organizers ask that recipients bring their own buckets or containers.

Mystery author to address writers’ group

SMITHFIELD — Mystery writer Jean Heller will be the guest speaker at the Johnston County Writers Group’s meeting planned from 6-7:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St. near the Ava Gardner Museum in uptown Smithfield. The meeting is open to writers, mystery fans and the general public.

Santa Train tickets available

SELMA — Tickets are now on sale for the Selma Santa Train, a round-trip ride from Selma to Raleigh on Saturday, Dec. 14. The train will depart the Selma Historic Union Depot at 10 a.m. sharp and will return at 11:45 a.m.

Children will be served juice and cookies. They will have an opportunity to visit with Santa on the train, have their photos taken and submit their wish list request. Families are encouraged to wear pajamas.

Tickets are $55 for ages 13 and older, $45 for ages 1-12 and free for infants younger than 1. For information or to purchase tickets, visit www.selma-nc.com/selma-santa-train or call Selma Parks and Recreation at 919-975-1411.
