Rec center to offer introduction to clay
SMITHFIELD — A two-hour introduction to working with clay is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 E. Booker Dairy Road.

MLK Day program is Monday in Selma
SELMA — The Richard B. Harrison Alumni Association will hold its annual Martin Luther King program at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Alumni Center, 405 Brevard St. Guest speaker is Bishop Ronnie Hood, pastor of St. Stephens Church of Christ in Princeton. Refreshments will follow the program.
Workday Playday is Jan. 20
SMITHFIELD — The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will hold its next Teacher Workday Playday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 E. Booker Dairy Road.
The day will offer arts and crafts, group games, swimming and outdoor play, weather permitting. Children will need to bring lunch, two snacks, water, a swimsuit and towel.

King Day in Smithfield
SMITHFIELD — A celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 403 Caswell St., Smithfield.
The Rev. James Herder will speak. He is pastor of Good Samaritan Baptist Church in Garner.
Youth leagues seek players
CLAYTON — The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department is registering young people for T-ball, baseball and softball.
Town of Clayton residents pay $30 for T-ball and $40 for baseball and softball. All others pay $60 for T-Ball and $80 for baseball and softball.
Registration for town residents is open now. Registration for nonresidents opens Jan. 20. Sign up at claytonparks.org/register.
Planning board to hear rezoning requests
SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Planning Board will hear two rezoning requests when it meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the courthouse in Smithfield.
One request would allow a sand-mining operation on 130.5 acres on at 651 Williford Road in Bentonville Township. The other would agricultural and residential use on 2.167 acres at 14766 N.C. 50 in Cleveland Township.
Farm market open every other Saturday
CLAYTON — The Clayton Farm and Community Market has returned for select Saturdays this winter.
Remaining dates are Jan. 25, Feb. 8 and 22, and March 14 and 28. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Horne Square, which is on Main Street in the heart of downtown.
Daddy-Daughter Dance returns Feb. 22.
SMITHFIELD — Registration is underway for the 23rd annual Daddy-Daugther Dance, which is scheduled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 E. Booker Dairy Road.
Dads and their daughters will enjoy music, dancing, appetizers and photos.
The cost is $45 per couple for Smithfield residents and $55 for other couples. Additional daughters can attend for $5.

Youth baseball, softball seeking players
SMITHFIELD — Registration is underway for youth baseball and softball.
Baseball is for boys ages 7-15, and softball is for girls ages 7-12. For baseball, practice will begin in mid-March, with games starting in April. For softball, practice will begin in April.
For both sports, the cost is $25 for Smithfield residents and $50 for all others. Registration for baseball ends Feb. 14; the deadline to sign up for softball is Feb. 21.
