HOLLY SPRINGS — A trip to the state championship series will be on the line Saturday night in Wendell as Corinth Holders High varsity baseball team fell to Holly Springs, 5-3, on Thursday, May 23, in game 2 of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A East Regional finals series.

The visiting No. 3-seeded Pirates (22-6), the champions of the 4-A Northern Athletic Conference, scored three unearned runs in the first inning. But North Carolina State University commit and starting pitcher Matt Willadsen settled down for the No. 4 Golden Hawks and allowed no more runs for the rest of the game in the complete-game win.

Holly Springs, champion of the 4-A South Wake Conference, took the lead in the fourth inning. Pirates starting pitcher junior Gabe Brewington gave up three runs before being removed for junior Matt Kelley in the fourth inning. Kelley gave up a hit, walk and run to take the loss.

The Pirates will host game 3 on Saturday at 7 p.m. Corinth Holders will have every pitcher available for the game, including ace junior Landon Ginn, whom head coach Adam Weaver originally said would start game 2.
