SMITHFIELD — Smithfield-Selma High’s senior point guard Anthony Council scored a career-high 51 points Friday to give his varsity boys basketball team a 73-55 win in its 3-A Greater Neuse River Conference opener against West Johnston High.
“Any conversation about this game has to begin and end with Anthony Council,” West Johnston head coach Scotty Williams said.
The Spartans (5-8, 1-0 GNR) came into this game on a five-game losing streak. Council said he wanted to make sure they broke it.
“I was trying to get the ball and just go,” Council said. “I didn’t want to lose our first conference game because we’re having peaks and valleys right now — so I just wanted to take off.”
