Four Pirates, two Cougars headed to state wrestling tournament

Wrestlers from Corinth Holders and Neuse Charter are headed to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association championships in Greensboro this weekend after finishing in the top four in their weight classes at their respective regional tournaments Saturday.

Neuse Charter’s Franko Cuccurello is the 1-A East Regional 138-pound champion after finishing fourth in the regionals last year and losing in the first match. Cougars senior Isaiah Deck also finished third in the 170-pound weight class. 

Corinth Holders had two wrestlers, Andrew Doss and Jeffrey Palmer, finish second in the 4-A East Regional. Doss was the runner-up in the 152-pound weight class and Palmer was second at 220 pounds. The Pirates will also send Cooper Carlson, who finished third in the 195-pound division, and Nathan McKenna, who was fourth at 182.

In addition, nine other wrestlers from Johnston County will compete in Greensboro this week, including West Johnston’s Gavin McKendrick, the 3-A East 120-pound champion. The Wildcats also had Ryan Schroer finish second in the 126-pound class.

Noah Johns of Clayton was second in the 3-A East 106-pound division. The Comets also had Zach Winterstein, Logan Jones and Amari Williams finish third. 

Cleveland, which hosted the 3-A East Regional, will send Jackson Desaulniers and Alejandro Figueroa after both finished fourth in their respective classes.
