KENLY — James Rudolph “Pete” Keene, 89, passed away Friday evening at the home of his son in Ayden.

Pete was born in Wilson County on Nov. 17, 1929 to the late Grover and Florence Bunn Keene. He was retired as a licensed vocational nurse. Pete proudly served his country in the United States Army. His greatest passion was his love of music. Pete could always be found with his guitar in hand strumming a few strings of music.

A service to celebrate Pete’s life was held Saturday, March 9, in the Chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. The family received friends following the service at the funeral home.

Pete is survived by his sons, James “David” Keene and Joseph “Danny” Keene, both of Ayden; daughter, Bernadette M. Gibson, and husband, Mike, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Adam King and Ashley Goldstein; and his special longtime friends, Ken and Sandra Renfrow.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, J.D. Keen and Bob Keen.
