KENLY — The Johnstonian News is back for its second year as title sponsor of North Johnston’s winter basketball tournament, which begins Thursday.

The Panthers will host the Johnstonian News Holiday Invitational, a four-team tournament that will crown boys and girls basketball champions Friday night.

“We are thrilled to death with the Johnstonian News,” said Jay Poole, head coach of the North Johnston girls basketball squad. “Thrilled to have them back as sponsor.”

A season ago, both North Johnston programs swept through the competition to win the tournament.

Keeping in mind proximity to Kenly and North Johnston’s status as a 2A school, the tournament chose a field of Goldsboro Rosewood, Raleigh Charter and Creedmoor Falls Lake Academy to compete for this year’s titles.

The games will begin Thursday with Falls Lake Academy (2-3) taking on the Rosewood girls (1-5) at 3 p.m. The two schools’ boys programs will square off at 4:30 p.m., while the North Johnston girls (6-1) and Raleigh Charter (2-3) will play at 6 p.m.

The Panther boys (1-6) will cap off the night against the Phoenix (0-5) at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, the games will continue on the same schedule. The girls loser’s bracket game will be at 3 p.m., followed by the boys loser’s bracket contest at 4:30 p.m.

The girls championship game will follow at 6, then the boys championship game will wrap up the tournament at 7:30.
