WENDELL — With head coach Shannon Lee and three players out sick, the Corinth Holders High varsity girls basketball team couldn’t keep up with visiting Rolesville, falling 52-26 in the Lady Pirates’ home 4-A Northern Athletic Conference game Friday night.
The Lady Rams (14-3, 3-1 NAC) set the breakneck pace they wanted to play early and the short-handed Lady Pirates (11-7, 1-3) were not ready to play at that speed and fell behind 19-2 at the end of the first quarter.
“That’s not an excuse, (injuries and sickness) is probably what affected us, so we got in a hole and we couldn’t find our way out of it,” interim head coach Duane Brown said. “We lost on the rebounds, turnovers and we lost a little heart. We got a good team, got a resilient team, it’s just we’re tired. We’ve been battling injuries all season.”
The Lady Rams didn’t stop applying their full-court pressure the entire game. The Lady Pirates didn’t find any offensive rhythm until the fourth when the Lady Rams put in their backups.
“You got to find a little heart and go out and play hard,” Brown said. “We got good kids. They’ll come back and do better. It happens a lot. It happens to a lot of teams, but you just have to deal. Everyone has to deal with their adversities. We just didn’t handle it too well tonight.”
One bright spot for Corinth Holders was junior Deonna Adams, who scored a game-high 13 points. Mikaila DeVaughn led Rolesville with 11 points.
Now in the heart of conference season and dealing with multiple players out, the Lady Pirates know it doesn’t get any easier and need to find a way to get over the hump. The next test is a visit to Knightdale and hosting Heritage. Two wins could move the team up to third in the conference.
