SMITHFIELD — In recognition for the high school’s 50th anniversary this year, Smithfield-Selma High will be hosting its basketball alumni weekend on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25 — celebrating the accomplishments and moments of past coaches and players who have played for the Spartans.

The events of the weekend begin on Friday during the SSS home basketball games against Clayton. During halftime of the girls game, past women who played or coached from the 1970s through the 2010s will be honored during a ceremony, while boys basketball alumni will be honored at halftime of the boys game against the Comets. Admission to the game is free for all basketball alumni and former coaches.

Women who wish to participate should RSVP to Marlon Lee at marlonlee@johnston.k12.nc.us and men should RSVP to athletic director Matt Cuddington at matthewcuddington@johnston.k12.nc.us, including their graduation year or years coached in the email.

Alumni weekend will continue with alumni basketball games on Saturday afternoon at the high school’s gym. The women’s alumni game will start at noon, while the men’s 30 and over game will follow at 1 p.m. A men’s game for players under 30 will wrap up the competition starting at 2 p.m. The cost to participate in the games, as well as admission to watch, will be $5; admission for school-age children is $1.

All proceeds will benefit the Spartan boys and girls basketball programs.

Women and men interested in playing in Saturday’s games should RSVP to Lee and Cuddington, respectively, including a brief writeup of where they are now, their favorite memory of SSS basketball and accomplishments since hanging up their jerseys for the Spartans.

From 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday night, an alumni social with business casual dress will be held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatic Center adjacent to the school. The focus of the evening is for past teammates and alumni to share stories about playing basketball, as well as reliving the awards, accomplishments and teams that the school has fielded over its 50-year history.

Videos of past teams will be shown at SRAC during the social and light refreshments will be provided.
