Tobacco production meeting set Friday

SMITHFIELD — The N.C. Cooperative Extension in Johnston County will host a tobacco production and good agricultural practices recertification meeting on Friday, Jan. 11, beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. at the Johnston County Agricultural Center.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. and will finish with lunch.

Leaf dealers and contracting companies require growers to attend the GAP recertification meeting each year. For those not able to attend, a complete list of meetings can be found at www.gapconnections.com.

Tobacco information books, new materials for the GAP record-keeping binder and other materials will be available at the meeting.

Pesticide recertification credits and certified crop adviser credits will be offered. Exhibitors representing tobacco production products will be present to discuss their products before and following the meeting.

The program will include a representative from the U.S. Department of Labor, who will give a labor management update. A highlight of the meeting will be production updates from North Carolina State University tobacco specialists from the crop science, plant pathology and economics departments.
