Community Calendar: Nonprofit seeks Christmas aid applicants

KENLY — Kenly Area Ministries will accept applications for Christmas assistance from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. The nonprofit will be open at the same time each Tuesday and Thursday to receive applications.

Kenly-area residents are asked to bring identification cards, proof of family income, proof of address and Social Security cards for all family members.

Those who wish to contribute to the Christmas aid project can send donations to Kenly Area Ministries, PO Box 1168, Kenly NC 27542.

Park to show ‘Hotel Transylvania’

SMITHFIELD — The town of Smithfield will hold a family-friendly Movie in the Park event from 6-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 with a free showing of “Hotel Transylvania” in the Smithfield Community Park.

Church plans homecoming service

SELMA — Selma Original Free Will Baptist Church, 600 N. Pollock St., will hold its 90th homecoming celebration at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 with a message of faith presented by University of Mount Olive President David Poole. A fellowship meal is planned immediately following the worship service.

Town to host trunk-or-treat

SMITHFIELD — A trunk-or-treat is planned from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 26 at Smithfield Community Park. Children can attend in costume to receive early Halloween treats.

Amateur radio exams offered

SELMA — The Five-County Volunteer Examiner Team will offer free Federal Communications Commission amateur radio licensing exams at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Thanksgiving Fire Department, 2375 Thanksgiving Road.

Instructions on how to study and register for the amateur radio exam are available at or by calling Mark Gibson at 919-628-0096. Exam registration is required.

Dixie Melody Boys concert scheduled

PRINCETON — The Praise Sanctuary, 305 Barden St., will have the Dixie Melody Boys in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. Admission is free and a love offering will be taken.

Santa Train tickets available

SELMA — Tickets are now on sale for the Selma Santa Train, a round-trip ride from Selma to Raleigh on Saturday, Dec. 14. The train will depart the Selma Historic Union Depot at 10 a.m. sharp and will return at 11:45 a.m.

Children will be served juice and cookies. They will have an opportunity to visit with Santa on the train, have their photos taken and submit their wish list request. Families are encouraged to wear pajamas.

Tickets are $55 for ages 13 and older, $45 for ages 1-12 and free for infants younger than 1. For information or to purchase tickets, visit or call Selma Parks and Recreation at 919-975-1411.
